5 of Our Favorite Atlanta Dogwalking Parks

Updated: Dec 14, 2023

Over the years, we've walked dogs in many different Atlanta neighborhoods, but when Saturday rolls around and you've got some extra time to spend with your furry friends, Atlanta has some amazing parks to spend the day. We wanted to take a moment to highlight a few of the larger parks that we love here in our hometown.

  1. Piedmont Park

  2. Freedom Park

  3. Grant Park

  4. Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area

  5. East Palisades Trail

  • Piedmont Park

It only makes sense to start with Piedmont Park. This 200-acre park nestled in Midtown and connected to the Atlanta Beltline is packed with different trails to walk your dog and even has a dog park for your dog to socialize with other pups. Although, we know socializing isn't for everyone ;) Enjoy the shade cover of the different paths or lounge on this hillside of any one of the larger fields that are perfect for fetch. If you didn't pack a cooler, check out the local brewery Orpheus before calling it a day. Their outdoor seating is shaded and perfect for you and your dog.

  • Freedom Park

Freedom Park is another popular destination for dog walking in Atlanta. Another park of over 200 acres, you can find several trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds, making it a great spot for a family outing and a walking favorite for your dog. If you end up getting bored in the park, you can always explore the surrounding streets full of beautiful houses or make your way past the three-hole golf course for a slice at Fellini's -- one of our favorite pizza places in town.

  • Grant Park

If I had to pick one park that I think is most underrated in Atlanta it would be Grant Park. It's nestled perfectly in Grant Park neighborhood and with its numerous trees and shaded trails it's the perfect place for dogwalking in Atlanta. It is also home to the Atlanta Zoo that's sure to cause your dog's ears to perk up at some point on the walk before getting back to enjoying the sights. Similar to Freedom Park, the surrounding neighborhoods of Grant Park and Summerhill are incredible spots to continue your walk thanks to the many historic homes, great sidewalks, and neighborhood bars/restaurants. Our favorites include Halfway Crooks for a cool, crisp lager or Bennett's for the best turkey club in Atlanta!

  • Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area

The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a beautiful natural area located just inside the Atlanta perimeter. There will be no shortage of Atlanta dogwalkers here! This area is home to several hiking trails that offer stunning views of the river and surrounding landscape. If you swing by in the summer you'll be sure to see plenty of people floating the river (or as we locals say, "Shootin' the 'Hooch") with coolers and wireless speakers in tow. It's easy to spend a few hours here from exploring the paved and unpaved trails and your dog is sure to love it!

  • East Palisades Trail

The East Palisades Trail is a popular hiking trail that offers stunning views of the Chattahoochee River. It's in the same general area at the Chatthoochee Rec area mentioned above, but this isn't as casual of a dog walk. The 3.3-mile trail features several steep climbs and descents, so be prepared for a workout and make sure your pup is up for the challenge. Dogs are welcome on the trail, but be sure to keep them on a leash and clean up after them.

There are tons of different parks here in Atlanta for the perfect Atlanta dogwalking experience. The Leashes and Litterboxes team works with hundreds of clients in the Atlanta area and is always here for you when you need a trusted, local dogwalker or petsitter. We look forward to working with you in the future!
